iPhone Cover Band
March 2nd, 2009I found this on BuzzFeed and the description said, “Much like being super-good at Guitar Hero, this performance is kind of impressive and kind of still not as cool as actually playing music.” Agreed. Still, it’s pretty cool.

Love Grenades “Young Lovers”
January 22nd, 2009Loves it.
Sorry I am not posting frequently, I’ve just moved and things are hectic. I will get back on track very soon!
Emmy The Great
January 14th, 2009Emmy The Great is my new favourite. This is the 2nd single from her new album which I belieeeeeeve is not released yet. Conveniently, both are titled “First Love”. Check it out! It’s crazy-good.
New house: worth the stress
January 10th, 2009Hexes and Ohs
January 9th, 2009
Lost amidst all the 2008 releases was Bedroom Madness by Hexes and Ohs. I just listened to it for the first time today. Hexes and Ohs are a band I always knew I liked, I just had to listen to more of their stuff. Boy and girl vocals. Pop. Synthesizers. Bonus: Canadian. Need I say more?
In High Places - Hexes and Ohs
PS: They are highschool sweethearts.
Covers! 80’s!
January 8th, 2009Buffetlibre Rewind 2.0 80’s covers. Awesome much?
I have spent all morning downloading songs and getting really excited. I am unhealthily addicted to covers. Here are some of my favourites:
Here Is The News (ELO cover) - Au Revoir Simone
Y Control (Yeah Yeah Yeahs cover) - Baron von Luxxury
Dancing in the Dark (Bruce Springsteen cover) - Kah
Buddy Holly (Weezer cover) - Little Pictures
Head Over Heels (Tears for Fears Cover) - Hexes & Ohs
I Wanna Sex You Up (Colour Me Badd Cover) - Charlie Ash
But seriously there are millions of them. If I keep going I’m just going to post the whole damn list. Go check it out for yourself. You can also download the entire thing as a .zip file, which I highly suggest you consider.
21 Best Albums of 2008
January 7th, 2009I know I know, everyone is doing it. I swore I wouldn’t do it this year. But I couldn’t resist. I know I’m also a bit late because everyone cranks these things out in November. But anyway here it is, better late than never, my top 21 albums of 2008 is no particular order (besides alphabetical):

Artist: Beach House
Album: Devotion
Song: Gila
I still am on my campaign to convince everyone I know that mellow does not equal boring, and I couldn’t stop listening to this album this year. There is a reason people keep talking about this band, and that is because they are amazing. It may not be party music, but it’s pretty much perfect for just about everything else.

Artist: Bodies of Water
Album: A Certain Feeling
Song: Under The Pines
One thing I love about Bodies of Water is that every member of the band (or most of them I think?) sings. Sometimes simultaneously. It’s awesome to see live and I will go see them every single time they come into town because they put on such an amazing show and have so much energy and make me feel good. If I was in a band, I would totally want it to be like Bodies of Water.

Artist: The Breeders
Album: Mountain Battles
Song: Walk It Off
Maybe I’m biased because I looooved The Breeders when I was younger, but it was about time they got together and released a new album. It could be the nostalgia talking, but I’m pretty sure it’s the fact that this album was damn good.

Artist: Crystal Castles
Album: Crystal Castles
Song: Crimewave
Every time I hear this album, it makes me want to dance. And I don’t do dancing.

Artist: Deerhoof
Album: Offend Maggie
Song: Chandelier Searchlight
I wasn’t that into Deerhoof before this album, but then after listening to this I realized they write perfect weird little pop songs. And so this became one of my favourite albums of the year.

Artist: The Grates
Album: Teeth Lost, Hearts Won
Song: Burn Bridges
The Grates are just so much fun to listen to and sing along with, and I am a huge sucker for singing along. You need fun albums in your life, am I right?

Artist: Grouper
Album: Dragging a Dead Deer Up A Hill
Song: Heavy Water / I’d Rather Be Sleeping
This album blows my mind every single time I listen to it. Headphones strongly recommended, if not mandatory.

Artist: Hercules and Love Affair
Album: Hercules and Love Affair
Song: Blind
This dude’s voice has drugs in it. The first time you hear it, you’re like, that’s new… and a little weird. And the second time you are totally addicted and cannot get enough. I tried to resist it, but it was impossible.

Artist: The Kills
Album: Midnight Boom
Song: Tape Song
The only thing I don’t understand is why more people aren’t listing this as one of the best albums of the year. They are just pure awesome and this is, in my opinion, their best album yet. I know, I know, it wasn’t on Pitchfork’s list, but trust me, you’re going to go buy this album and you’re going to love it.

Artist: Land Of Talk
Album: Some Are Lakes
Song: Some Are Lakes
I LOVE LAND OF TALK. I don’t even know why. Maybe it’s because they’re Canadian? But everything about them just sounds right to me. If I were ordering this list, which I’m not, but hypothetically, if I were, this would definitely be somewhere near the top.

Artist: The Long Blondes
Album: Couples
Song: Here Comes The Serious Bit
This album did not get very good reviews from what I remember, but I really really liked it. Sometimes things work that way. One big popular site says no it sucks, and then everyone else follows along and agrees and soon enough people won’t even give it a chance. It’s too bad because there are some great songs here!

Artist: Lykke Li
Album: Youth Novels
Song: I’m Good, I’m Gone
Helloooooo, obviously. As soon as I saw the live accoustic version of the above song I was like, SOLD!

Artist: Marnie Stern
Album: This Is it and I Am it and You Are it and so Is That and He Is it and She Is it and it Is it and That is That
Song: Ruler
What can I say about Marnie Stern besides the fact that she is awesome and kind of my hero? She can play guitar better than everyone, her songs are cool and weird and exciting, and this album is so good it will totally give you chills. She is a genius!

Artist: Mates Of State
Album: Re-Arrange Us
Song: Get Better
If an award had to go to the album I listened to the most this year, this album would win. I have loved Mates of State for many years now and this album was equally as awesome as all of their other albums. I finally got to see them this year live and it was probably one of the greatest shows ever for me. Their music just makes me happy. You cannot see them or listen to them and not feel good!

Artist: MGMT
Album: Oracular Spectacular
Song: Kids
Every MGMT song I heard this year I immediately didn’t like until about halfway through when I realized it was the best song ever. They were a band I never thought I’d like but they snuck (I know it’s “sneaked” but it just sounds wrong) up on me. People say they’re overrated but that’s only because no one can resist them.

Artist: Mother Mother
Album: O My Heart
Song: Body Of Years
It’s too bad that not many people know about Mother Mother or heard this album this year. If you’re going to make the effort to listen to one new album on all of these best-of lists that you’ve never heard before, seriously, make this the one.

Artist: The Organ
Album: Thieves
Song: Oh What A Feeling
Whyyyyyyy did you have to break up? I loved you so much! This EP of old unreleased tracks just reminded me of how much I miss The Organ. Way to go, now I’m sad again.

Artist: Santogold
Album: Santogold
Song: L.E.S. Artistes
You shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover. But as soon as I saw the album art for Santogold’s album, I immediately realized I was going to love her. She is vomiting glitter. Need I say more?

Artist: She & Him
Album: Volume One
Song: Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?
Ok, Ok, I know there was big controversy when some magazine I can’t remember because I never read it named this album of the year. Admittedly Zooey is a huge selling point. But aside from all that nonsense, I thought this was a great little pop album. It’s freaking adorable!

Artist: Tilly And The Wall
Album: 0
Song: Pot Kettle Black
It is my fate to never see Tilly and the Wall live. I need to see the tap dancing! Why am I not allowed! It just seems that every time they come into town I miss the show for some reason or another. Anyway, again another fun album where singing along (and tap-dancing along if that’s your thing) is required.

Artist: Vivian Girls
Album: Vivian Girls
Song: Tell The World
I am going to continue to ignore the bad press and scandalous videos on the internet and just listen to the music, because this album, despite maybe their personalities being, um, allegedly not the greatest, is quite wonderful.
Z + B
January 6th, 2009Siiiiigh. Zooey Deschanel and Ben Gibbard are engaged. I have a huge crush on both of them so this is like a perfect indie rock fairy tale to me. The above video is them singing “Dream” live, just a little clip but it’s also perfect because how cute is that song?
